International Academy of Colleges of Anaesthesiologists

The HKCA has been working alongside with The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI), Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) to establish The International Academy of Colleges of Anaesthesiologists. After a year of preparation, the International Academy was due to be inaugurated in September 2020 at the World Congress. However, due to the postponement of the World Congress, the inauguration of the International Academy was put on hold. After another year of discussion, The International Academy of Colleges of Anaesthesiologists was officially launched on 30 April 2021 at the ASM of ANZCA. Dr Brian Kinirons, who was the President of the Academy, handed over his presidency to Dr Vanessa Beavis, who is the President of ANZCA, at the launch of the Academy. The President of the founding Colleges have filmed a video which was played at the opening ceremony of the ANZCA ASM. The HKCA had a simple celebration on 1 May 2021 at the ANZCA ENGAGE hub in Hong Kong to mark this milestone.

ANZCA ENGAGE Hub in Hong Kong

ANZCA had a few ENGAGE hubs in the major cities in Australia and New Zealand as well as in Hong Kong to broadcast their ASM and Ceremony on 1 May 2021. Dr Ming-Chi Chu, on behalf of FPM ANZCA, presented the FPM Fellowship to Prof Chi-wai Cheung and Dr Steven Wong at the Ceremony.

Annual Scientific Meeting in Anaesthesiology 2021 (20 – 21 November 2021, Hong Kong)

The Annual Scientific Meeting in Anaesthesiology 2021 (ASM 2021), which is jointly organised by the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists and the Society of Anaesthetists of Hong Kong, will be held on 20 – 21 November 2021 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

All of us have been through a period like no others and we admire and appreciate your tenacity to pursue new knowledge and better clinical practice that will ultimately benefit our patients. ASM 2021 is going to be the most important knowledge exchanging platforms for anaesthetists, intensivists and perioperative physicians in Hong Kong. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Overcoming the Risks”. We hope to overcome the barriers of physical distancing and reconnect with you through live discussions and recorded lectures from local and global experts.

This year’s programme includes Symposia on Perioperative Medicine, Pain, Neuroscience, Regional, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Medicolegal, ICU and Education as well as a series of interactive workshops. Please stay tuned for more updates on the meeting details later on.

Fellowship Examinations

The Intermediate Fellowship Examination, and Final Fellowship Examination were held virtually on 23-24 April 2021 and 14-16 May 2021 respectively. Congratulations to all those candidates who have passed the examination. The College is grateful for the time and efforts of the examiners and coordinators, patience and understanding of the candidates, and hard work of the College’s staff.

COVID-19: Lessons for the future of Anaesthesia and Critical Care, 15-17 June 2021

COVID-19: Lessons for the future of Anaesthesia and Critical Care, which is organised by the International Academy of Colleges of Anaesthesiologists, will be held virtually on the 15-17 June 2021.

Faculties from Hong Kong on day 3 includes
• Prof Chi-wai Cheung, who will give a welcome speech
• Dr Kenny Chan, who will speak on “Aftermath of previous pandemics”
• Dr Hing-yu So, who will participate in a round table discussion on “Innovation during COVID-19 pandemic”.

Revision Tutorial Course by Prof Peter Kam

The schedule of the revision tutorial courses this year has been confirmed. Since the international travel restriction is unlikely to be lifted by the end of this year, Prof Kam will conduct the course virtually like last year.

2021 FPM ANZCA & HKCA Virtual Spring Meeting

Due to ongoing travel restrictions, the Organising Committee have decided to now run the Combined Spring Meeting, which is scheduled for 15-17 October 2021, as a fully virtual meeting. Further details will be announced soon.

Collaboration with The Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine

The Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine and the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists (HKCA) have co-organised a course of “Enhancing Safely in patients requiring Sedation or Rapid Tranquillisation”. The course aims to equip psychiatrists with knowledge and skills for a safe rapid tranquillisation and to emphasise the safety aspect of tranquillisation, anticipation and handling of crisis. The HKCA appreciates the effort and contribution from Dr Albert Chan and Dr Benny Cheng, the first course was successfully conducted on 13 May 2021.

COVID-hit on perioperative medicine in Hong Kong

COVID-hit on perioperative medicine in Hong Kongby Dr Henry Wong was printed in The International Anaesthetist published by Royal College of Anaesthetists. Dr Wong shared a brief glimpse of the introduction of ‘teleprehabilitation’ from his research work and ideas during the pandemic.

Annual Subscription

Debit notes for the 2021 subscriptions have been sent to Fellows and Members. Please settle your subscription as soon as possible.

The subscription fees for 2021 are:
Local Fellow: HK$3,500
Local Member: HK$1,750
Overseas Fellow: HK$ 875
Overseas Member: HK$ 438
Senior / Retired Member/Fellow: waived

The annual subscription would be waived for fellows and members aged over 65 or for those who have declared retirement (irrespective of age). The waiving of subscription will start in the following financial year after the fellow/member had attained aged 65 or over or after the retirement application received by the College secretariat. To declare retirement, a written declaration from the applicants confirming that they had retired from all remunerative practice/job/business in or outside Hong Kong.
