2024 HKCA Distinguished Young Fellows

The College is delighted to announce the establishment of the HKCA Distinguished Young Fellows Award, commencing in 2024. This initiative is designed to recognise exceptional young fellows who have not only demonstrated remarkable academic achievements but have also made significant contributions to the HKCA, their profession, or community across a range of domains within the first 10 years of fellowship. We strongly believe that recognising and fostering such talent is paramount to building a better future for our community and generations to come. For further information about this award, please visit the College’s website.

This year, the College received seven applications, all of which demonstrated outstanding qualities and achievements. The applications were reviewed by the President, 1st Vice President and the CEO of the College through a meticulous and rigorous review process. It was a challenge to select only two candidates for the inaugural HKCA Distinguished Young Fellows Award. However, after careful consideration, we are pleased to announce that the following young fellows have been chosen to receive this prestigious award. They will also be nominated to the Academy for their Distinguished Young Fellows.

  • Dr Lee, Sau Man Rowena
  • Dr Ling, Lo Well Lowell

While there are only two winners for the coveted Distinguished Young Fellows Award, we firmly believe that there are several other outstanding young fellows whose achievements deserve our applause. Hence, the HKCA Achievement Award for Young Fellows is also established to honour those who have exhibited exceptional dedication, and promise in their respective fields. We are pleased to announce that the following young fellows have been chosen to receive this award.

Positive Psychology Project

As members of the Anaesthesia community, we are all undergoing various kinds of stressors — going through training and examinations, managing challenging clinical cases, facing aftermath of crises situations, dealing with interpersonal relationships, enduring administrative pressures. Due to various reasons, we are often unaware of the consequences of burnout until our stress accumulates and crosses the threshold; and even if we are aware, we may not have good strategies to prevent or manage this.

Positive psychology is a scientific, evidence-based approach to enhance one’s well-being and resilience, and has been studied in many industries including healthcare. The Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists received a grant to not only look into the effects of positive psychology in our practice, but also integrate a feasible solution amongst our busy clinical duties using a mobile platform.

Our first cohort in November 2023 was a great success — with over 50 fellows and members taking part in the project to help us explore the role of positive psychology in our profession.

We cordially invite you to join us in the second cohort of this important journey to explore the role of positive psychology in Anaesthesia! We welcome everyone — fellows, trainees, public, private anaesthesiologists. Once enrolled, you will be invited to our induction workshop on 13th July 2024, where we will introduce key concepts of positive psychology to everyone over food and drinks! Please enrol on or before 10th July 2024.

Special Interest Groups

The following two additional Special Interest Group (SIG) have been formed.

  • Green Anaesthesia SIG
  • Obstetric Anaesthesia SIG

If you are interested in joining the SIGs and learning more about their objectives, please go to the SIGs webpage.  We expect those fellows / members who have indicated joining the SIGs could complete the respective registration form so that the list of membership could be accurate and comprehensive.

It has been extremely rewarding to see the positive responses on setting up SIGs, and we now have total five SIGs formed in less than half a year.  At the recent council meeting, the Council decided to temporarily suspend receiving new application for forming SIGs. This is a necessary step to allow us to address the uncertainties in running SIGs, and ensure a smooth operation of the SIGs already formed in the hope of creating the best possible experience for our fellows and members.

We apologise for any inconvenience this temporary suspension may cause. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue participating in the formed SIGs. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us by emailing to SIG@hkca.edu.hk.

Young Fellows Committee Updates

The Pre and New Fellows Leadership Retreat took place on Saturday, 22nd June 2024.

In the first half, Prof. Hui, a professional trainer from HKU Business School focused on the following concepts in the 2hr leadership workshop:

  1. Understanding who you are as a person and as a leader, being aware of the assumptions you make about the people you work with
  2. Persuading and attracting followers, motivating and leading the team to problem solve by simplifying the problem and setting an anchor
  3. Motivating engagement: asking the right questions to get input, managing efficiency, understanding barriers to execution

Prof. Hui shared many interesting anecdotes and observations which provoked us to reflect on the way we communicate and analyse problems as leaders.

In the Fireside chat session, young fellows (some very young and some not so young) shared their experience about stepping into various leadership positions within HA, the college and elsewhere after becoming a specialist, the challenges they faced and some survival skills they picked up along the way.  The chat aimed to inspire participants to think about in what direction they want to further develop their career once they become a Fellow. There are a lot of opportunities to serve or to lead, and having a front foot mentality might help young fellows to step outside their comfort zone.

This Leadership Retreat marks the end of the current YFC term, 2022-2024, and the new YFC term has just started.  We hope all Fellows and Members will continue to support Young Fellows’ development and future YFC events!

Kristy’s 15-year service

Congratulations to Ms Kristy Cheung, the CEO of the College, for 15 years of exceptional dedication and hard work at the College. During this period, her contributions have been numerous and significant. Kristy helped to transform the College from a small family business to a structured enterprise education corporate. Her unwavering commitment was instrumental in navigating the shocking time when ANZCA departed. Additionally, she played a key role in developing and rolling out the competency based training curriculum, establishing the fellowship of pain medicine, enhancing the relation between the College and the international Colleges, and leading us through the COVID-related crisis and virtual examinations. Kristy also played a part in the restructured proceedings of the Congregation.

The College greatly appreciates Kristy for her exceptional dedication and invaluable contributions to HKCA over the past 15 years.

2024 ANZCA ASM and ELC

Every year, ANZCA invites the College to nominate a Fellow, who is within five years of fellowship, to attend ANZCA Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC). The ELC is a three-day meeting with the purpose of facilitating the development of leadership capabilities in those new fellows identified as being significant future contributors to our profession and the College. Since 2023, the application process has been changed from “nomination by COS” to “individual application”. The eligibility and criteria for selection follow the instructions set laid down by ANZCA. Dr Anna Fung was selected to attend the ELC, together with Dr Hing-yu So, the President of the College.

Dr Hing-yu So and Ms Kristy Cheung, the CEO of HKCA attended the ANZCA President’s dinner, College’s Ceremony and Gala Dinner which are the regular overseas events that the President and CEO attending in the hope of forging a close relationship between the two Colleges, and forging networks and friendships with other overseas colleges and societies. This year, Dr Tony Ng and Dr Vivian Cheung received the ANZCA Fellowship in Pain Medicine at the College’s Ceremony. The College would like to extend the congratulations to them.

One of the primary objectives of the trip was to have a business meeting with ANZCA. Alongside the existing collaborations between the colleges, both parties are open to exploring potential collaborations that would mutually benefit the two communities. The College is going to partner with ANZCA to conduct a session focusing on leadership at the ASM 2024 in the hope of collecting input and perspectives from young fellows regarding the ELC Hong Kong version that will take place in Hong Kong in 2025. More details will be announced soon.
